Christmas in Manhattan

Our Manhattan Diary Makes Christmas in New York City Better

When Americans think of the holidays, New York City often comes to mind. It all begins with the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where Santa and his reindeer make their grand entrance, signaling the start of the season.

And then, several of our favorite Christmas movies are set in The City That Never Sleeps. Whether it’s Home Alone 2, Elf, Serendipity or Miracle on 34th Street, we wander along the streets and boroughs there with Kevin, Fievel, Buddy, and Kris Kringle.

And, when Christmas is all over, the festivities continue! The NYC-based New Year’s Rockin’ Eve from Times Square is the most viewed and attended New Year’s Party on TV.

And with the amazing shopping at Macy’s, FAO Schwarz and the Bryant Park Winter Market…

The world class dining on a budget in Times Square, Gotham Market and the Bowery Market…

the Ice skating at the Rink in Rockefeller Center (with that huge Christmas tree)…

Or attending a Christmas Concert at Saint John the Divine…

Or taking in the Holiday Train Show at New York Botanical Garden…

it’s no wonder over seven million visitors show up each year for the Holidays!

A tour through our Manhattan Diary

When you go touring around New York City, be sure to bring some comfortable shoes with you. You’ll be doing a lot of walking to get from one place to another.

Here, Avenues run north to south, and streets, east to west. The city is divided into two parts by Fifth Avenue: East Side and West Side.

This repeated pattern means that you won’t always need a map to get to where you are going. And when you do, the map you need will be found at the back of the Manhattan City Diary.

You don’t have to pull out your phone and fumble to get the information you need. Our Manhattan Diary puts “Gotham” at your fingertips: it gets you where you need to go, right away.

Here’s what you do:

  • Look up the category of what you are looking for in the Table of Contents (page 3)
  • Turn ahead to the page it points you to,
  • Choose a place that interests you,
  • and make your way toward the place you need to go. You can call the company you need to reach.
Let your fingers do the walking

“Let your fingers do the walking” was a saying adopted by the Yellow Pages phone directory. It is an encouragement to call ahead. This keeps you from going uselessly to a place that is closed or doesn’t have what you are looking for.

As you walk through the streets and avenues of Manhattan, the best guide would be an up-to-date Yellow Pages Directory. However, the phone company hasn’t printed one of these since 2005.

To replace it, our Manhattan Diary is like a mini-phone book which lists the best New York City has to offer.

Last February, our staff went through the entire directory to update every listing, phone number and address. Although the Rough Guide and the Blue Guide are great travel companions for your holiday trip to New York City, our Manhattan Diary is the most up-to-date guide to New York City… and it fits in your pocket.

A place for your discoveries

A city as vast as this one will certainly allow you to serendipitously discover places not mentioned in our planner.

And when you do, we have a place for you to keep them!

Just before the maps in the back, there are several lined pages for you to list your favorite discoveries in The City.
